How to Prepare for Weight Loss Surgery

Warming
In weight loss surgery as in other forms of surgery, the risk of wound infection after surgery is an ever - present problem. However, warming patients before routine operations can cut the risk of infection by more than 60 per cent, reports The Times of London.
Researchers at the University Hospital of North Tees, England, divided over 400 patients who were about to have weight loss surgery and other forms such as; breast, varicose - vein, or hernia surgery into three groups. One group received no warming, and the other two groups had either localized or general warming for at least half an hour before their operations. What was the result?
Postoperatively, only 5 percent of the warmed patients suffered wound infections, compared with 14 percent of those that were not warmed. It is noteworthy that warming has already proved effective in reducing infection rates for patients undergoing colorectal surgery.
Music
Can music help patients during weight loss surgery? The results of research conducted at the Jefferson General Hospital in Port Townsend, Washington, suggest it can. Music therapist Helen Lindquist Bonny and nurse anesthetist Noreen McCarron studied the effects of music in the operating room on 25 different patients. Music instead of sedation was used to quash the sounds within the operating room that often create anxiety before an operation.
Melodious music reduced blood pressure and heart rates, notes American Health, and also cut by half the sedatives needed to calm patients. A comparable study in the Federal Republic of Germany showed a similar reduction. Classical music, as well as popular music from the 40's and 50's, with even tempos and rhythms was used. Wild, raucous sounds were shunned. McCarron claims that the soothing effect of music is equivalent to 2.5 mg of Valium. Patients listening to it generally felt better after their operation and could go home sooner.
Therefore, if your doctor has recommended weight loss surgery, why not discuss warming before the operation with him? Try to have your favorite music around, it can do the magic you need. Do not erroneously belief that your doctor knows everything. Let him understand how you feel, for respect for patients right is an essential element of good medical care.
